ASK AMY: What do you do in your spare time?

There are two answers to that question: In the summer? Sleep. In the winter? Travel! Running weddings seasonally means there is a finite amount of time to pack everything in, so there really isn’t time for much of anything else. On a wedding day once the ceremony is done, dinner has been served and guests have begun to dance the night away, I will begin to make my way home in the evening (anything before 9:00pm would be considered an early night!). Frequently on my way out, Danielle will ask me, “What are you doing tonight?” and my answer is the same 99% of the time, “Going to bed! Ha” Usually so I can get up and do it all again the next day.

Weddings are exhausting, there’s no secret about that. Even attending a wedding as a guest can make for a long day. In part, I think that’s what everyone who works here loves about it. There’s nothing more satisfying than knowing that you have given everything you’ve got that day, and nothing more rewarding than a comfortable bed when you get home.

After wedding season is over, we generally take some time to get caught up on things (and Danielle goes on a cleaning and organization rampage!) and then what I now think of as my travel season begins. Anyone who knows me knows that I often haven’t even returned home from one adventure before planning another. In fact, Thanksgiving weekend was the first time since last Christmas that I had more than three consecutive days off and remained in the province!

I was bitten by the travel bug on my first overseas trip when I was 16 to Italy. I swore on that trip that I would return, and I did many, many times for school, but I would say that I have kicked things up a notch in recent years. The last two years have seen me in Ireland, Italy, France, Costa Rica, Honduras, Hawaii, Florida and most recently in British Columbia in September. I would now consider myself a bonafide travel addict, always looking to get my next fix! I often blame my addiction on the fact that I live in a small town, always itching to get out and see the world, but if I’m being honest I don’t know if I could ever kick the habit, no-matter where I lived.

Most of my adventures now revolve around two things – surfing and scuba diving. The water has always been my second home, growing up in my backyard pool and eventually lifeguarding and teaching swimming lessons. Only recently did I fall in love with these two water sports though – surfing last year in Costa Rica (hence the trips to Oahu, Hawaii and Tofino, BC) and scuba diving in Roatan Honduras where I got my certification last January. I will be returning to Costa Rica this December to do both, and have a long list of places to visit next, with Australia ranking #1 for obvious reasons!

Here’s to an upcoming travel season. May your travels be plentiful, your bags be light and your flights never delayed.
