Artist: Barbara Callander – Photographer

I think there is a big difference between someone who takes photographs and a photographer. With digital cameras and even phones making it easy for everyone to take pictures all the time, people like Barbara Callander really stand out.

Barbara is not just a talented artist; she is also a neighbour of mine. (In the country sense of the word, that is—out here a neighbour can live many kilometres away!) I love her work because it celebrates nature, especially at rest. Unlike those of us who snap away with our phones, she patiently waits to capture beautiful images of our peaceful Kawartha Lakes region and the wildlife that lives here.

She is especially fond of birds, which can be very hard to photograph well; you will see herons, osprey, loons and more. Her secret is heading into the camouflage of reeds with her kayak and camera (with a long lens)—and sometimes her dog Sophie—to watch for the perfect moment to photograph the natural world. You can see samples of her work on her website, but be sure to come to Art in the Fields to admire it up close!

Art in the Fields runs from July 1 to July 7 at South Pond Farms [vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text][www.southpondfarms.ca][/vc_column_text][vc_column_text] from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., except for July 6 10:00 to 1:00. Join us for an opening reception on Sunday, June 30 from 1:00 to 5:00.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][mk_fullwidth_slideshow images=”11221,11222,11223″][/vc_column][/vc_row]
