Artist: Jennifer Kneitas – Mixed Media

I think one of the most fascinating things about our upcoming event Art in the Fields will be the opportunity to see how differently the various artists interpret nature and landscape in their work. Some paint or photograph vividly lifelike images while some create stylized representations of leaves and natural forms.

I think of Jennifer Kneitas’s paintings as a dream of nature. Jennifer recreates landscapes from her own photographs, but they’re not literal depictions of a shoreline, for instance. Rather, Jennifer uses graphite, layers of paint, gesture and an internal sense of colour to create more contemporary approach to depicting her surroundings. The combination is a compelling mix that hovers somewhere between realism and abstraction. I guarantee you’ll want to linger in front of these striking canvases.

Jennifer holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Queen’s University. During her time there, her work was featured in exhibitions at the Union Gallery and Modern Fuel, as well as the student-run events Cezanne’s Closet and Exposure. She returned to her home town of Whitby, Ont., where she paints in her home studio on a part-time basis. Her recent work can also be found at the Lions Art Show and Sale during the Cobourg Waterfront Festival.
